Words For Auntie Janet by Sylvia Ng

In Japan, it is the cherry blossoms season again, I remember writing something similar for Auntie Linda in 2013. I cannot believe that I am writing these words for you today. We had a video chat only three weeks ago..........I miss and love you so much, we had a special relationship especially after the epic 6-hour conversation at your house after Andy and Collette’s wedding. I was really happy you could let go and reveal your true inner feelings.

The name Janet means “God’s gracious gift”, a person with this name is honest, benevolent, brilliant, inventive and full of high inspirations. You lived true to your name.

Auntie Janet, you went through a tough childhood in Hong Kong with your sisters. However, because of your determination and diligence, you had a successful career at the United Nations. You also made many friends who love you so much because you were so honest, brave and loveable.

When we were growing up, we thought of you as the “scary”aunt BUT you had a heart of pure gold. When something was broken, you would fix it. When I needed my trousers shortened, you would get out your sewing machine and have it done within minutes. All the camping trips we went on in Europe when we were children, you always took care of us with so much love. Thank you.

I was glad you could find happiness for yourself when you got married. Uncle Manfred loved you very much. He is now waiting for you with a gentle smile and saying “Liebling, danke, Du hast gute arbeit geleistet”.

You looked after everyone, always giving never taking. I believe you were a saint. You often went out of your way to help the family and friends, always with a smile.

The last time you came to Japan in 2017 with Mum and her friends and we went to the fire department, remember??? You did a great job in using the super-highly powered extinguisher, you were able to hit the target!!!

The trip to Hong Kong in 2018 was out of this world, my students said that Mum and you were so kind and attentive to them. Thank you.

We are in mourning but you have given us an opportunity to really reflect on our lives. Thank you, Mum, Andy, Collette and Anna for your dedicated care, support and love. I am deeply sorry I am not there with all of you. Again.

Auntie Janet, thank you for being my aunt and you will always be in my heart. Rest now. Love forever.
